Competition weekends are exciting. Packing for them can feel like preparing to relocate your entire house.

Between costumes, shoes, hair products, makeup, snacks, chargers, garment bags, quick-change supplies and all the tiny things that somehow become very important five minutes before stage time, it’s easy to forget something.

Backstage Ready was created to make that part easier.

The best way to pack for competition is to stop thinking about it as one giant list and divide everything into categories.

Start with costumes:

Whether there are 11 costumes or only 2 costumes, every routine should have its own costume, tights, undergarments, shoes, accessories and hairpieces accounted for before anything goes into the car.

We love keeping each routine together in a labeled garment bag whenever possible.

If a costume has separate gloves, earrings, belts, hairpieces or other accessories, keep them with that costume rather than storing all accessories together.

The fewer places you have to search backstage, the better.

Pack hair and makeup separately:

Hair products and makeup tend to multiply quickly. Keep them in dedicated organizers instead of tossing everything into the dancer’s main bag.

At minimum, most competition families will want hair spray, gel, brushes, combs, elastics, hair nets, bobby pins and any required styling tools.

Makeup should include everything required by your studio plus enough tools and backup supplies to handle touch-ups throughout the day.

Create an emergency kit:

A good competition emergency kit can save an entire weekend.

Think beyond Band-Aids.

Fashion tape, safety pins, a small sewing kit, stain remover, extra tights, clear straps, blister care and backup hair supplies are the kinds of items you rarely need — until you really need them.

Don’t forget the parent bag:

Competition packing isn’t only about the dancer.

Portable chargers, water, snacks, a sweater, medications, comfortable shoes, headphones, a small first-aid kit and something to keep younger siblings occupied can make a very long competition day significantly easier.

Make a final check before you leave!

The night before competition, do one last run-through by routine rather than by item.

Instead of asking, “Do we have all the shoes?” ask: “Do we have everything needed for jazz?”

Then move to lyrical, contemporary, tap, musical theater and so on.

That small change catches missing pieces surprisingly well.
